Asset and equipment tracking systems

Trailers, generators and heavy machinery are expensive assets, and many of them have no permanent power. That makes asset tracking a different solution from vehicle tracking: its central decision is the trade-off between battery life and reporting frequency.

The core trade-off: battery versus frequency

A battery-powered asset device does not report continuously — if it did, its battery would be flat within days. Instead it reports at intervals: hourly, every few hours, once daily, or on detected movement.

The more frequently it reports, the shorter the battery life. The longer the battery life, the less current your knowledge of the asset's position. No device gives you both, and anyone promising continuous live reporting with long battery life is selling you a contradiction.

So our first question is: do you need the asset's position on demand, or do you need to know if it moved? The answer determines the device and the reporting plan.

Common use cases

Trailers

A trailer gets uncoupled and left at a site or yard. The device tells you where it is, when it moved, and how long it sat at each location — the basis for calculating trailer utilisation.

Heavy equipment

Excavators, pumps and generators on project sites. Useful for tracking movement between sites and approximate running hours for maintenance scheduling.

Containers and bins

Assets moving between warehouses, ports and sites. Tracking cuts the time wasted looking for them.

Assets exposed to loss

Assets in open sites or remote areas. An out-of-hours movement alert is the one our customers enable most here.

What we review before recommending

  • Does the asset have permanent power? If so, a hard-wired device is better and cheaper to run
  • How often you genuinely need the position: live, hourly, or once a day
  • The operating environment: dust, heat, water and vibration — these set the protection rating required
  • Mounting position and how concealed it can be, plus how easy later battery replacement will be
  • Whether you need approximate equipment running hours for maintenance scheduling
  • How many assets you have and how they are spread across sites and cities

Frequently asked questions

How long does the battery last?
It depends on the device model, the reporting frequency you choose, and ambient temperature. The quote states the approximate life for the agreed reporting setting, not a generic catalogue figure — because catalogue figures are usually measured at the lowest possible reporting frequency.
Can a trailer with no power be tracked?
Yes, with a standalone battery device fitted to the trailer. Reporting frequency is set to your need, and we usually recommend movement-triggered reporting to conserve battery without missing the events that matter.
Will it give me accurate equipment running hours?
Approximate running hours are possible through vibration or movement sensing, or via a wired connection where power exists. An exact reading from the machine's own hour meter needs a connection that depends on the equipment type, which we verify per model.
Does the device guarantee recovery if equipment is stolen?
No. It provides the last known position and the movement record, which helps when reporting. Recovery depends on the competent authorities and the circumstances, and we do not promise it.
