Driver behaviour monitoring and fleet safety

Incidents cost more than repairing the vehicle: lost operating time, rising insurance, and disputes with customers. Behaviour monitoring gives you data that turns "the drivers speed" into comparable numbers you can actually follow up.

What is measured, and how

Thresholds are tuned with you by vehicle type and road, because the wrong threshold produces alerts nobody reads.

From the tracker

Behaviour events

  • Exceeding the speed limit you set for the fleet or a vehicle type
  • Harsh braking and sudden acceleration
  • Harsh cornering
  • Extended engine idling
  • Movement outside approved working hours
From the platform

Scoring and reporting

  • A score per driver based on event count relative to distance covered
  • Comparison between drivers or branches on the same basis
  • Score trend over weeks, to see whether improvement is real
  • Exportable reports for use in performance reviews

An important caveat: measurement alone does not reduce incidents

We have seen fleets fit systems and see nothing change, because nobody looks at the reports. Data changes behaviour only where there is a named owner, a steady review rhythm, and a known process for what happens when events repeat.

We also advise going gradually: start by comparing drivers rather than penalising them, and tell drivers that measurement is happening and exactly what is measured. Measurement that surprises a driver produces resistance; measurement that is known produces improvement.

And we do not promise an incident-reduction percentage. Any figure before we have seen your fleet's data would be a guess.

How to roll it out so it actually works

  1. Set the thresholds

Speed and braking thresholds appropriate to your vehicle types and roads. Too strict produces noise; too lenient produces nothing.

  2. Tell the drivers

A written policy setting out what is measured, why, and who sees it. This step is the difference between a system that is accepted and one that is resisted.

  3. Review weekly

A short session on the reports: who has the most events, and who improved. A regular review matters more than threshold precision.

  4. Attach a process

A known, graduated process: a conversation, then training, then a formal step. Data with no process becomes an archive.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need cameras for behaviour monitoring?
No. Speed, braking and cornering events are measured by the tracker. A camera adds visual context and ADAS/DMS features where the model supports them — see the truck cameras page.
Is the scoring fair between drivers?
It is fair when calculated relative to distance covered rather than as an absolute event count, and when comparing similar vehicles and routes. A driver covering twice the distance will naturally generate more events, and we configure reports to account for it.
Do speed alerts use official road limits?
In practice we work from a threshold you set for your fleet or a vehicle type. Relying on road limits depends on what the platform offers and on road data quality, and we state what applies in the quote rather than making a generic promise.
Can the reports be used in driver accountability?
Many of our customers do exactly that. To make them usable, the policy must be written and communicated in advance, the thresholds reasonable and known, and the process graduated. That is a management matter rather than a technical one, but it determines whether the data gets used or ignored.
