Truck cameras and driver monitoring solutions

A camera turns a dispute into evidence: what happened in the incident, who was at fault, and what the driver was doing beforehand. But not every "truck camera" does the same things, and that difference is what drives both the price and the outcome.

Do not assume every camera supports driver-assist features

Basic two-channel cameras (road + cabin) record; that does not imply any intelligent analysis. Features such as collision warning and driver attention monitoring (ADAS / DMS) require a model that genuinely supports them, usually at a different price. Our quotes state the model name and the features it supports, and we do not market a higher model's features on a lower one.

What we always separate

Recording — available on basic models

Recording camera (dashcam)

The core function: continuous recording to a memory card, with clips preserved on impact or severe shock.

  • Road-facing recording ahead of the truck
  • Cabin recording (driver-facing), depending on installation
  • A clip saved on a collision or shock event
  • Clip retrieval when needed — from the card or remotely, depending on the model
Intelligent features — require a supporting model

ADAS / DMS

Image analysis producing real-time warnings. Not a software option added to any camera, but a capability of the model itself.

  • ADAS: road-related warnings such as following too closely or lane departure
  • DMS: driver-related warnings such as drowsiness indicators or distraction
  • The accuracy of these warnings is affected by lighting, installation and camera angle
  • Enabled with thresholds tuned with you to reduce false warnings

Streaming and retention: the honest numbers

Streaming is not unlimited. It consumes mobile data and depends on network coverage where the truck is. In practice it is used for on-demand review, not as a permanent 24/7 stream for an entire fleet. The data plan in the quote sets the usage limits, and we write them down plainly.

Recording duration on a card is not a single number. How many hours a 64 or 128 GB card holds depends on the channel count, resolution, bitrate, frame rate and recording settings. So we do not say "the card lasts X days" as a rule — we calculate it from the settings of the model quoted to you.

Card recording works by overwriting the oldest footage. You retain the most recent window, and anything before it is replaced. If you need clips kept for longer, they have to be moved and stored off the camera, and we agree that as part of the solution rather than assuming it.

What we review before quoting

  • Your goal: evidence after incidents, reducing risky behaviour, or both
  • How many channels you need: road only, road and cabin, or an extra rear or cargo camera
  • Whether you genuinely need ADAS/DMS — and whether the budget covers the model that supports it
  • Data plan: how many stream reviews you expect per month, and who is authorised to open them
  • Driver privacy policy: a cabin camera needs clear, written notification
  • Mounting position and camera angle, since both affect image quality and warning accuracy

Frequently asked questions

How many hours does a 128 GB card record?
There is no correct generic answer. It depends on channel count, resolution, bitrate, frame rate and recording settings. We calculate an approximate duration from the settings of the model quoted, rather than offering a single marketing figure.
Can I view the camera live at any time?
Live viewing is available where coverage and the data plan allow it. It is not a permanent stream for the whole fleet, because that consumes data impractically. We agree with you who may open a stream and when.
Is a cabin camera legal?
We do not offer legal advice. Our practical recommendation is that your in-cab recording policy should be written and communicated to drivers, making clear what is recorded, who can see it and how long it is kept. That protects the company and makes the footage acceptable when it is used.
Are the warnings always accurate?
No. Warnings based on image analysis are affected by lighting, weather, mounting angle and lens cleanliness, and false warnings do occur. We tune thresholds with you to reduce them, and we do not promise absolute accuracy.
Is a camera a substitute for a tracking device?
No. The camera gives you the picture; the tracker gives you position, route and reporting. The two complement each other, and cameras are normally run alongside a tracking solution rather than instead of one.
